Even those whose therapeutic mission is to treat those with the “disease” of substance use find this funny? Now that is a wonderful piece of irony! It is big business couching drug and alcohol use as “disease”. However, this disease model informing the mainstay of “treatment” programs is fraught with very high rates of recidivism. Still, professional ambitions and prestige are looked after!

That is the irony of present-day America; which is at once ” apparently sympathetic towards those who are “afflicted” with alchoholism, as if such were truly a disease state, and, at the same time, acoholics are fair game for our culture’s moral disapprobation.
