We visited the Pittsburgh Zoo this last weekend (May 31, 2009) and got some hilarious video of a baby beaver having a little disagreement with mum about whether it was swim time or nap time. I don’t know who eventually won, because the routine you see in this video was repeated every couple of minutes all afternoon! We came back later and there were two babies making a break for it. Every time daddy beaver catches a young one in the water, he would take it over near the nest and deposit it on the shore. But momma beaver meant business and when she caught up with baby, she carries it right up into the nest, tucks it in, and adjusts the branches a bit as if she could keep the baby in with the right arrangement. Eventually, she goes off to find some more logs and baby beaver makes yet another break for it.
