Rescued Possum Eating Mouse

This possum named “Panda Bear” was rescued along with 6 brothers and sisters after his mother died from an infection brought on by an injury. When they were found, all the babies were still in their dead mother’s pouch. My mother saved them as she has so many other animals in her personal crusade to save as many wild animals as she can. This video is a tribute to my mother on Mother’s Day 2009. I am so proud of her accomplishments, and I’m glad to be her son. She specializes in possums and beavers, and thank GOD she’s there to protect them. This video features a possum who’d be dead if my mother hadn’t helped him. Moms Rule!

Feeding little Stuart, cute baby mouse

Feeding little Stuart, cute baby mouse

This is a video showing how I fed my little mouse Stuart as he grew up. He started out being fed with a fine paintbrush and then moved on to getting his goats’ milk from an eyedropper. He was such a hyperactive, squirmy baby that I usually had to start feeding sessions with the paintbrush and only once he calmed down was it possible to feed him with the eyedropper. I had to feed him round the clock, every two hours at first and then once he was around 7 days old every 3 hours. It could take up to 30 minutes to feed him because he was so wriggly. I have handraised a mouse before, little Jason was a much calmer baby and much easier to feed. Stuart could be quite the test to my patience :P Once he could eat a milk/crisp bread/rodent block porridge on his own, I just had to make sure the milk stayed fresh, so only had to get up once or twice in the night. The transition from bottle feeding to eating solid food on his own only took a few days. Was I ever pleased once the bottle feeding was over :) Do love my hyper little boy though – he has grown up to become a very beautiful and most affectionate mouse. WARNING: do not attempt to raise a pinky unless you are a very experienced animal person or it is a true orphan and there is no other choice. It is better to start with a fuzzy, a little mouse between 8 and 10 days old who has fur but whose eyes have not opened yet. You are much more likely to be successful. Stuart’s nipple search – cute baby mouse

Little Stuart is a mouse I am hand raising. He is doing very well, but he is finding some things hard to adjust to. Bottle feeding just does not seem natural and he really wants to nurse in the more normal way. In his tiny mind my fingers have become his siblings and since they are all lined up, mom’s nipples must be at the base of those fingers. He just can’t understand why he can’t find them and becomes so anoyed he squeaks loudly in frustration. My first bottle baby Jason had no problems this way, he soon learned what an eyedropper was for and never looked back. He was a more easy going, less active mouse. This is what I like so much about mice, each has its own unique little personality, although I did not know it would be so noticable at such a young age. Bottle feeding is hard on the little guys, they are much better off with mom. Only bottle feed an orphan or a baby destined for snake food. Stuart is now eating on his own and ready for the best mousy life, but those first two weeks were hard on him. He is healthy but much smaller and more scruffy looking than mouse-reared babies of the same age. He will soon catch up though and become a beautiful sleek mouse, no different from his peers. WARNING: do not attempt to raise a pinky unless you are a very experienced animal person or it is a true orphan and there is no other choice. It is better to start with a fuzzy, a little mouse between 8 and 10 days old who has fur but whose eyes have not opened yet. You are much
