I was really disappointed by the lack of in-depth information about the meanings and origins of the names. The descriptions from their website – what people thought of a person with a particular name was pretty useless. They all pretty much said the same thing – funny, kind, friendly. Blah blah blah. You’re better off asking your friends and family their opinions. I think it’s the only baby name book I’ve ever seen that did not split up boys & girls names, but this didn’t bother me much. Just be aware if you prefer separate sections. I ended up returning this book to get something else.

I must admit I’ve been using BabyNames.com regularly for years. After all, a fiction writer is a parent, sometimes of hundreds of children, and he/she needs the perfect name for each of his/her characters. So I awaited the publication of this book with positive eagerness. And I was not disappointed. For a writer, one of the most useful sections is “Names to Avoid”. Want to find the perfect name for a heavy? There you are! Of course in my own fiction like Micaela Morris in Jo’s Heaven and Other Stories and MEXICAN AUTUMN, I didn’t wish to be too exotic, but at the same time I wished to avoid the over-used “Tom”, “Dick” and “Harry”. The “One-in-a-Million Baby Name Book” provides perfect answers to a writer’s prayer.

Has probably any name you could ever imagine. The only thing I would change would be to have separate boy and girl sections instead of putting them all together.
